Research project, 2011
media facade concept

OPENEYE is an ambient media facade concept, based on a repetitive element for day and artificial light usage.
In its basic construction the single element of the OPENEYE structure consists of a flexible frame, a wire rope hoist driven by an electric motor, four separately controllable light sources and an elastic, translucent fabric cover. Assembled to a structure, the form as well as the appearance features visual dynamization and interactive functionality of architecture by kinetic movement and animated illumination.
In contrast to most currently existing media facades, the concept uses a reduced presentability of its visuals through low resolution, with the aim to create a medium “Piano”
– a communication in a moderate, sensitive speed, away from specifically advertising contents. The creative key aspect of the OPENEYE´s lighting is to operate based on natural effects. It uses the biological and psychological effects of regulated illumination in terms of their positive, stimulating effect on the human organism, in order to improve well-being and quality of life. The variation of the elements aperture allows the regulation of the light incidence inside the room at day, as well as the play of light and shadow patterns. At darkness the structure additionally becomes versatile variable in its combination with artificial lighting, allowing different atmospheres, structures and motions of space.

Artwork, Gent/Belgium 2011

BBASS is a minimalistic appearing projection installation, created as a contribution to the Ghent Light Festival.
In collaboration with the Brussels based architecture studio SAQ, the auditorium of the University of Ghent, with its adorned, domed ceiling and an artificially drawn-in hemisphere on the floor, was transformed to an oversized dual speaker for a period of three days. By synchronizing the aligned video projection with sub-frequency, synthetic bass tones, an extremely contrasting experience of space was created compared to the original condition of the room.
In its presented impulses the installation behaves like a living organism. Through the randomized succession of short visible and audible sequences, appearing in varying intervals, the viewer falls into the dependence of waiting and expectancy. A continuously prevalent pulsating background sound and a low basic brightness in the room, which only allows to slightly recognize the ornamental decorations of the huge auditorium, produced an almost devoutly, cathedral-like atmosphere.

Research project, 2008
media facade concept

“space:code” is an environmentally integrating media facade concept.
The idea is, that control impulses and energy supply of the architectural elements are produced and held up by the inexhaustible resources wind and sunlight. The facade is made of a supporting grid structure and acrylic glass tiles, arranged in changing directions. Through the curved aerodynamic shape, light and wind are able to act harmonically. A lateral light feed-in of the tiles edges, creates an uniform illumination and by the help of wind turbines, every module is independent in it´s power supply. Additionally, the tiles have a transparent film layer, which is controlable in a smooth way from 0 to 100 percent. The required voltage is generated by structure integrated photovoltaics. The combinability of color changing-artificial light and controlable diffusion of the transparency film allows an incredible amount of lighting styles, as well as day and night – interior and exterior.
